The Shop & Templates

What exactly do I get when I buy a template?

A complete handbuilding project β€” not just a shape to cut out. Each pottery template comes with:

  • A precisely measured template and step-by-step instructions

  • A curated color combination and glaze recommendations

  • A guide to the glazing techniques used in this project

  • Additional ideas for styling and decorating your piece

  • A recommended tools and materials list

Every slab building template has its own page on clayslab.club where you can download the PDF, stream the videos, and get all the other info immediately. Everything in one place. No "figure it out yourself" vibes here.

Are the templates suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. We're here to take you all the way. Each pottery template for beginners tells you exactly what to do, in what order, and why β€” so even if you've never touched a slab roller in your life, you'll be fine. Some projects are easier than others, and we'll always tell you upfront what level you're working with.

Can I sell pieces I make from your templates?

Yes, absolutely! Make it, sell it, make your coins. The ceramic template is yours to use. Just don't resell the template itself β€” that's our thing.

Do you offer refunds on digital products?

Because our printable pottery templates are digital downloads, we can't offer refunds once you've clicked that 'buy now' button. But if something's wrong or you have an issue β€” please reach out. We'll sort it out!

Will there be new templates?

Yes, and frequently. New slab building projects drop regularly, so if your current situash isn't giving what you need, check back soon β€” or send us a suggestion at hello@clayslab.club.

Clay & Materials

What type of clay do I need?

That depends on the project! Each template tells you exactly what kind of clay to use. For kiln-fired ceramic projects, you'll need a proper ceramic clay body. For air-dry clay projects, any good air-dry clay works β€” no kiln, no stress.

We can't recommend a specific brand or type, because clay varies a lot depending on where in the world you are. That said, a low-to-midrange stoneware with a little grog (up to 20%, fine grain up to 0.5mm) is generally a solid choice for slab building. For air-dry clay, make sure you're not accidentally buying modelling clay or polymer clay β€” those are harder to work with for larger objects, especially if you're just starting out.

Can I use air-dry clay?

Technically, yes β€” you can use air-dry clay for any of our slab building projects. The difference is that air-dry clay is never food safe or dishwasher safe. But that doesn't mean you can't make the projects: our Office Mug makes a really cute pen holder, and the Cookie Plate is a perfect little catch-all. Still cute. Still valid!

What tools do I need?

Each ceramic template includes a full materials list so you're never guessing. For most handbuilding projects, the basics are: a slab roller or rolling pin, a small kitchen knife, a work board, and some basic pottery tools. Nothing too wild!

Where can I buy the materials?

Most clay and tools are available at your local art supply store or online. We link to our favourite suppliers on our Free Stuff page β€” go check it out.

Techniques & Process

I've never done slab building before β€” can I still do this?

That's literally what we're here for. Slab building is one of the most accessible ceramic techniques out there, and our pottery templates are designed so you don't need prior experience to get a great result. We walk you through every step.

How long does it take to make one project?

It depends on the project and your pace, but most slab building projects take between 30 minutes and 2 hours of active making time β€” plus drying time in between. Some projects are a quick win; others are a perfect chill weekend activity.

Do I need a kiln?

Not necessarily! Several of our projects are designed for air-dry clay β€” no kiln required. If you want to make kiln-fired ceramics and don't have a kiln at home, many pottery studios offer bisque firing or kiln rental. Worth googling what's near you. When you reach out, ask them about their bisque and glaze firing temperatures so you can choose your clay and glazes accordingly β€” most studios will be happy to help you with that. Ceramicists are genuinely good folks!

Digital Files & Access

How do I access my files after purchase?

Right after your purchase, you'll receive a link to your personal download page. Everything lives there β€” your printable pottery template PDF, the project video, curated colour ideas, and all the extras. Bookmark it, you'll want to come back.

What format are the templates in?

PDF. Print your ceramic template out at 100% scale to get the exact measurements when working. For best results, print at A4 or Letter size.

I lost my download link β€” what now?

No panic. Just drop us a message with your order details and we'll sort it out.

Bundles & Special Offers

Do you ever offer bundles or special deals?

Yes β€” from time to time we offer bundles or limited deals on our pottery templates. When they're live, you'll find them in the shop. The best way to never miss one? Sign up for our newsletter. We only send the good stuff.

Femke builds in her home studio in northern Germany; Rosalia brings her ceramics heritage all the way from Spain via Berlin. We started this because we wanted a resource we wished had existed when we started. So we made it.
